According to recent research by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), online advertising in the UK could surpass £1 bn pounds in 2005, driven by the increase in uptake of broadband services. The report went on to say that investment in online marketing was exceeding spend on billboard advetising for the first time. Revenues via online adverts increased by 62%, to £490 million, compared to 3% growth in advertising overall.
The study by the IAB, World Advertising Center and PricewaterhouseCoopers went on to say that they expected the online advertising industry to continue growing at a rapid pace. Online Marketing Expenditure now accounts for 5.8% of overall advertising expenditure in the UK, with the figure in the first half of 2005 exceeding that of the whole of 2003.
According to separate figures from the Advertising Association, the internet's share of advertising grew 51% to £210m in the first quarter of 2005.
