Yahoo testing click to call

Yahoo! has announced that it is to start running click-to-call ads linked to search results on mobile phones in the US and UK, in order to rival the current Google click to call offering.
Mobile search ads will work on handsets with web-browsing functionalities, and will allow people to call advertisers straight from the advert.

The keyword-based auction model will replicate that already used by Yahoo! online. However, the test currently open to only a few select advertisers

Search Engines and the NoIndex issue

Matt Cutts has highlighted how various major search engines deal with the meta noindex tag in Handling noindex meta tags. In one of his recent blog he noticed the following issue when analysing a particular website and the effect of the Noindex attribute in the search engine resultsets

  • Google doesn`t show the page at all
  • Ask doesn`t show the page at all
  • MSN shows a url reference and Cached link, but no snippet. Clicking the cached link doesn`t return anything.
  • Yahoo! shows a url reference and Cached link, but no snippet. Clicking on the cached link returns the cached page.

However, ironically, if you use a robots.txt file Google does show the page in the some ways, which Matt Cutts acknowledges.

Yahoo debuts new Ad Platform at SES San Jose 2006

During the recent Search Engine Strategies in San Jose, California (SES San Jose), the new ad platform from Yahoo! Search Marketing was previewed. During the presentation Yahoo! Search Marketing explained some of the features of the new system

  • New ad platform will be more like Google Adwords in terms of functionality, moving away from the “highest bid” wins type scenario that currently exists.
  • Moving to a more “ad-group” type model -> ie targets, creative, call to action
  • Geo-Targetting - the ability to target certain demographics including specific regions and languages
  • Keyword suggestion tool based on data collated from spidering the targeted landing page
  • Adverts will allow for A/B split testing
  • Ability to budget at both campaign and group level
  • Keyword tool displaying the estimated level of traffic

A lot of the above sounds like Yahoo are moving in a similar direction to Google, however there does seem to be some exiciting new stuff from a Yahoo perspective.

Expect this out towards the end of 2006.
