LSI - what is it and does it apply to search engine optimisation (SEO)

Been reading alot of marketeers banding round LSI as the new way forward, including a recent article via WebProNewsUK about LSI being the future of SEO. LSI has long been banded round the industry and can be traced back easily to the early nineties and documentation referencing LSI related research has been found earlier than this.

Whilst there is some research to suggest the search engines are seriously looking at LSI (some go as far as saying it has already been implemented), there are also a lot of Search Marketeers mis-selling LSI SEO, without fully understanding what it is and what it means, instead mistaking it with simple semantics as well as stemming.
